If you’re selling your Xbox 360, beware.
A university research group has claimed that potential hackers can easily grab hold of credit card information on pre-owned Xbox consoles. Using basic modding tools that anyone could easily download from the internet, the research team from Drexel University managed to get credit card info from a used Xbox 360.
Said researcher Ashley Podhradsky, ”Microsoft does a great job of protecting their proprietary information, but they don’t do a great job of protecting the user’s data.”
Microsoft has insisted that the team’s findings are “unlikely”, but they are conducting a thorough investigation into the issue. Jim Alkove, General Manager of Microsoft’s security of interactive business, had this to say.
“We have requested information that will allow us to investigate the console in question and have still not received the information needed to replicate the researchers’ claims… Xbox is not designed to store credit card data locally on the console, and as such seems unlikely credit card data was recovered by the method described. Additionally, when Microsoft refurbishes used consoles we have processes in place to wipe the local hard drives of any other user data.”
